1996 Topps Jim Scharrer 21 - Braves Card of the Day ⚾

I’m not in favor of including new draft picks in the flagship set. I prefer flagship to be a record of the major league season and too many draft picks just don’t work out to screw up the base set with them. As for Scharrer, he spent five years in the Braves system and never made it out of high A, despite an impressive high school resume. After a year in the Angels system, Scharrer retired from baseball.

His story doesn’t end there though. After his retirement, he was awarded a scholarship as a football player at Duke where he would play inside linebacker, starting during the 2002 to 2003 seasons. That is pretty cool.
